After his ordination in 1978, Rabbi Philip Pohl became the synagogue’s first full-time rabbi. The Buffalo, N.Y., native brought a strong background in rabbinic studies and Jewish education to our congregation. He was actively involved in the lives of our members. He participated in many simchas and shared the families’ happiness and pride. Over the years Rabbi Pohl has instituted many exciting new programs, including a special service for healing, for those who feel the need to pray for physical, emotional or spiritual well-being. “My goal is to help Congregation B’nai Shalom of Olney become a place where holiness is easily accessible to the worshipper. It is my hope that by walking into our synagogue, you will leave all outside distractions behind and take advantage of the many ways we try to bring God and Judaism into your life,” Rabbi Pohl said. Rabbi Pohl received his bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Columbia University, and earned a bachelor of Hebrew literature and master of arts in Judaic studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. In 1999, he received a doctor of ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. A well-known member of the Washington Jewish community, Rabbi Pohl has served as president of the Washington-Baltimore Region of the Rabbinical Assembly and as secretary of the Washington Board of Rabbis. As a member of the Jewish Chaplaincy Service, he also serves as assistant chaplain to the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department, and as visiting chaplain for Montgomery General Hospital. The son of Holocaust survivors, Rabbi Pohl is married to the former Sharon Temin, who grew up in Silver Spring. They have three daughters, Rebecca Leah, Ariela Liana and Hadar Yael. Rabbi Pohl resigned from B'nai Shalom of Olney in July 2005. Washington Jewish Week Article about Rabbi Philip Pohl - July 29, 2005 |
