ProgrammingOur children and teenagers discover a wide variety of meaningful and fun activities though our youth groups, which are open to all young people in the Jewish community. Programs for kindergarten, Bonim (first through third graders), Machar (fourth and fifth graders), Kadima (sixth through eighth graders) and USY (United Synagogue Youth for high school students), include Jewish holiday activities, trips, dances, picnics and sporting events as well as discussion groups and opportunities for community service. These activities are planned and accomplished by each group with guidance from their advisors and the synagogue Youth Commission. Social Action With energy and enthusiasm, congregants volunteer their valuable time for worthy causes. In the past, we have sponsored a food collection to benefit the AIDS Whitman Walker Clinic, participated in Montgomery County’s "Christmas in April" program, prepared and delivered food to young patients and their families at Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health, and collected and donated clothing and blankets for those less fortunate. In addition, the religious school students have collected toys and toiletries to distribute during the Christmas holiday season. Committees Members of B’nai Shalom of Olney plan our programs and make activities happen. We welcome and depend on the many talents of our congregants. There are an infinite number of ways to participate in synagogue life. There are committees for adult education, budget and finance, couples activities, education, fund raising, membership, land and building, program and publicity, religious, and youth commission, to name a few. The Choral Society performs during the High Holidays and at several services during the year. Social Events The synagogue’s social calendar is crammed each year as we gather to enjoy evenings of fellowship and fun. We have had highly successful casino nights, art auctions, and dinner events. |
