Nursery School

Our School

B’nai Shalom of Olney Nursery School is an early childhood educational facility for children ages 16 months through four years old.  The philosophy of B'nai Shalom of Olney Nursery School is to experience learning through meaningful play.  The curriculum is designed for the age level of each group of children, with particular emphasis on the individual needs, interests and developmental stages of each child.  Our curriculum is designed to create an atmosphere where learning experiences will occur and where children take an active part in the learning process.  Our classrooms are arranged to maximize children’s play, thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills.  It is our desire to provide a warm, loving Jewish environment where each child feels secure and happy and where learning is meaningful and fun.  The goals of the curriculum are:

  • To help each child make a successful transition from home to school.
  • To provide for all areas of the child’s development: physical, cognitive, social, linguistic, emotional and spiritual through an integrated approach to learning that is real, concrete and relevant to each child.
  • To provide for both age appropriate and individually appropriate activities based upon teacher observation of each child’s special interests and developmental progress.
  • To provide an atmosphere that is warm, loving and accepting.
  • To prepare the environment for each child to learn through play, active exploration and interactions with adults, other children and materials.  Activities are built upon what the child already knows and to encourage emerging skills.
  • To stimulate natural curiosity and encourage creative thinking.
  • To help each child to explore, observe, question and listen.
  • To help each child become increasingly responsible and independent.
  • To facilitate the development of a positive self image in each child
  • To enhance the development of each child’s understanding, knowledge and love of the culture, traditions, history, symbols and values of Judaism, while acknowledging and appreciating other cultures and practices.
  • To provide a non-biased, non-stereotypic and multi-cultural approach to learning.

We are certified by the Maryland State Board of Education, and we have a Private Educational Institution License. We have received the Commendation in Jewish Early Childhood Education from the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning.  The Nursery School also received a Silver Award for Nursery School Education by the Seaboard Region of United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism (USCJ).
