CONGREGANT OF THE YEAR

• It is time once again to nominate BSO’s Shining Star (aka.. Congregant of the year) and we are going to try something a little different this year -  We will have two different B'nai Shalom of Olney Stars; The Rising Star and The Shining Star
  • The Rising Star -  If you know of someone who has recently (within the past five years - new member or long time member) become involved in B'nai Shalom of Olney, who has started doing work as a volunteer above and beyond, someone who does without being asked, someone who is generous with his/her time unconditionally, then please nominate that person for this years Rising Star!

• On Sunday, April 11, we would like to invite you to a special “Alef-Bet” Celebration. The workshop will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at B’nai Shalom. At that time, we will share some of what we have learned by teaching you the Hebrew alphabet and then you will help us make our Hebrew name necklaces. This is a necklace that will hopefully be worn through confirmation (Grade 10) and maybe even through college.

• On Sunday, April 18, you are invited to participate in a family education program entitled, “Your Bar/Bat Mitzvah Wimpel / Tallit and Tefillin Workshop.  A wimpel is the material or sash that we tie around the Torah.  Myrna Yalon, a very talented artist and a friend of B’nai Shalom of Olney, will help you design and create the wimpel which will be used at your child’s

• The Learning Center is looking for volunteers who can help on Sundays between the hours of 10:30 - 1:30.  Any increment of time would be helpful.They usually meet with each student for about 15 - 20 minutes at a time. Volunteers should like to work with kids, have a lot of patience, and be proficient in Hebrew reading, prayers, and be able to help with bar and bat mitzvah prayers.  This is strictly on a volunteer basis.  The age of the students that we work with are from grade 3 through grade 7.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Judy Allal, the BSO Sunday Learning Center Specialist, via e-mail at josephine81957@yahoo.com.

• Recycle your old cell phones, and empty inkjet & laser printer cartridges. Look for specially marked boxes in the Religious School and main lobby. The items will be packed up and sent to a recycling facility and the synagogue will be reimbursed according to the items collected. Recycle, Reuse, Reduce. Help the environment, help reduce millions of pounds of landfill while raising money for BSO.

Karen Leventhal to be Honored as B’nai Shalom’s Young Leader

B’nai Shalom of Olney and Seaboard Region of United Synagogue will be honoring our member, Karen Leventhal on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 5pm, during the third annual Young Leadership - Azor hof Hayam Recognition Reception. The reception will take place at Chizuk Amuno Congregation 8100 Stevenson Road, Baltimore, MD 21208. The exciting evening will be a night of friendship and sacred community, as well as good food, wine and entertainment.
