SIMCHAT TORAH

REDSKINS UPDATE

• If you are interested in working at FedEx Field you will need to be fingerprinted. You can go any day to get your fingerprinting done. You need to go to the FedEx field office and ask for Scott Justice. Monday October 12, Scott will stay until 7:00 for those of you who can't make it during the day. COMING OF AGE IN MARYLAND

• Tuesday, October 13 @ 1:00 p.m. - A unique social and educational program designed with Seniors 60 plus in mind.  This program is co-sponsored by the JCC of Greater Washington , JSSA, and the Jewish Federation.  Join us for lively music and a sampling of one of our new events.   Frieda Enoch , from the JCC and the Capital Klezmers, will entertain and lead a sing-a-long of  familiar Jewish tunes.  Our version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” will follow. Light refreshments will be provided.

KIDDUSH KONVERSATION

• Saturday, October 17 @ 12:15 p.m. - Several Shabbat afternoons a year, B’nai Shalom hosts a Kiddush Konversation, with lunch, to extend our Shabbat experience beyond services.  Members of our clergy, Congregation and guests will speak on topics ranging from Israel, books, welcoming interfaith couples, special needs and much more!  The first topic will be - “The Religious Right’s Support for Israel:  Is it Good for the Jews?”, led by Al Temin

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18 @ B'NAI SHALOM OF OLNEY

• @ 6:45 p.m - Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament
• @ 7:00 p.m. - Jewish Film Festival in the Berlin Family Sanctuary – Live and Become - Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. His birth mother, who hopes for a better life for him tells him “go, live, and become” as he leaves her to board the plane. The film tells of his growing up in Israel and how he deals with the secrets he carries, not being Jewish and having left his birth mother. The film will be available from the BSO Library after the showing on 10/18.
• @ 7:00 p.m - The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew –Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. Join B’nai Shalom of Olney Sisterhood & members of the Muslim Community Center, Colesville Presbyterian Church & Transfiguration Episcopal Church for a meaningful and insightful evening.  A member of each faith from our local community will briefly speak of their personal religious experiences and impressions of the book. Please rsvp to Ilene Mizrachi by October 15th. The cost is $5.00.

UPDATES FROM THE HAZZAN

• Tuesday, October 20 @ 8:00 p.m. - Adult Education Kickoff - Hazzan Geller presents videos, pictures, and recordings from her trip to Poland and Israel as part of the historic Cantors Assembly mission.  You will experience the emotional commemorations, inspiring talks, and the great music of the two week experience.  That evening, you can also learn more about all of our adult education offerings as well as our next congregational trip to Israel in 2010.
• Monday, October 26 @ 8:00 p.m. - “BAYAMIM HAHEM BAZMAN HAZE": voices and styles of the great cantors during the Golden Age of the 20th century, Presented by Benjamin Z. Maissner- Cantor Maissner will share recordings of great cantors and help us understand and appreciate cantorial music even more.  This event is free – please bring your parents, aunts, uncles, friends, whether or not they belong to BSO!  Please join us that evening at 7:30 pm in the Shuman Chapel when Cantor Maissner will lead us in Maariv at our daily minyan.

• Sunday, October 11 @10:15 a.m. - Our Simchat Torah synagogue celebration, is a “must!”  This is a morning filled with joyful singing and dancing -- a Torah Party for all ages!  Hakafot will be at 10:15, followed by songs, stories & dances for children ages 2 - 5.

• Claire’s Gourmet – This is a fundraiser for our B’nai Shalom schools & our congregation families.  The fundraiser is open to the community!  If you have any questions about placing your order, please contact the nursery school office.  Orders are due Sunday, October 18th.  Orders will be delivered on November 8th.

• Ongoing - Every other Thursday between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Leslie Kessler, a licensed professional social worker who works at JSSA's Department of Aging, will be on site at B'nai Shalom once a month. SHe will be coming the second Thursday of the month. You are welcome to drop in or call the synagogue office to make an appointment. Please bring issues that you want to discuss, or just come in and say hi so she can get to know you. Her next visit will be November 12.

Where are our college students?
Be sure your college student is on B'nai Shalom of Olney's Koach list.  BSO maintains a connection to our college students by sending them holiday greetings and packages as well as the monthly newsletters and weekly announcements.   If you wish to have your student included, send their name, college, mailing address and e-mail address to Mara Bayewitz.   Please put BSO Koach in the subject line.  We need to hear from you to update their information, even if their address is the same as last year's.
