KOL HAKAVOD to Our USY

B'nai Shalom's own Ian Carchman won the prestigious Claire Sodden award. This award is given to one senior per year who is NOT on the regional board who exemplifies the spirit of USY in every way. It is a true honor, and it goes without saying that we are SO proud of our own Ian for being recognized for his ruach, love of community, and mindfulness of the world around him.

Our USY Chapter also returned from Spring Convention with the following Seaboard Region Awards:

• Chapter of Excellence
• Best Membership Program for Kadima: Roller Skating Overnight
• Best Membership Program for USY: Six Flags and Camping Overnight
• Best Overall Shabbat Program: Shul Domination
• Biggest Increase in Kadima membership
• Biggest Increase in USY membership
• Raising $650.95 for Tikun Olam
• Largest Attendance at Fall Convention

Shavuot, confirmation, adult b'nai mitzvah and more!

• Thursday, May 28 @ 7:30 p.m. - Help us usher in Shavuot with a festival evening service followed by a dessert and study program. Our topic will be The Evolution of Jewish Law: 20th and 21st Century Conservative Jewish Dilemmas.
• Friday, May 29 @ 9:15 a.m. - Shavuot services where we will be honoring our Day School students. They will be helping to lead the service.
• Friday, May 29 @ 7:30 p.m.- Confirmation for our students who have completed their formal religious education.
• Saturday, May 30 @ 9:00 a.m. - Please join us for the Adult B'nai Mitzvah class of 5769. They have worked very hard to get to this point. We look forward to seeing everyone at some point over the weekend.

Jewish Film Festival

Living History of B'nai SHalom of Olney

• Do you have a photo of the first founding group of B’nai Shalom?
• Do you have a photo of the shack or Ground breaking of the building?
• Do you own a Historic Relic that we could show case?

If you do or have other photos, books, artwork from our enriched past. We could use your help. Over the summer months we will be turning our display cases into a revolving history of BSO. If you have anything we could borrow please contact Roni Septoff.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

• Friday May 29: Confirmation
  • As a part of the special tradition at BSO, we invite the ninth grade parents and students to come to Confirmation so you can see, first hand, what a confirmation service looks like.  We ask, also, for your assistance with set-up and clean-up so that the confirmation parents can fully enjoy this life-cycle event. If you can volunteer, please email Linh (linh.nguyen@bnaishalomofolney.org).

Nursery School

• Wednesday, June 10: Last Day of Nursery School for 2009
• Thursday, June 11 : Celebration Day for our 4 year old classes
• The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington has established a central scholarship fund for families enrolled in local Jewish preschools.  The application and instructions are available via email or in person at B'nai Shalom of Olney Nursery School, Scholarship awards are needs-based; applications must be postmarked by Friday May 15; the Federation will notify families as to the outcome of their application by mid-June. Please contact BSO NS with any questions.

Shabbat Dinner

• Friday, June 19 @ 6:00 - Come say farewell to all your friends before they leave for the summer. We are having a Shabbat Dinner BBQ summer kickoff, followed by services outside, under the stars!!(reservations) Please note lower price this month!!

JSSA’S SYNAGOGUE LIAISON PROGRAM AT  BSO

• Starting Thursday, May 7 between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Leslie Kessler, a licensed professional social worker who works at JSSA's Department of Aging, will be on site at B'nai Shalom every other Thursday starting on May 7th. You are welcome to drop in or call the synagogue office to make an appointment. Please bring issues that you want to discuss, or just come in and say hi so she can get to know you.

B'nai Shalom of Olney is holding a Membership Drive. We have a couple of very exciting incentives that we offering right now:

• $200 referral Fee - Current Members can receive a $200 Referral Fee credited to their account if their family or friends join B'nai Shalom of Olney.  New Member applications must contain the name of the referring member.
• Two for One - NEW Senior Members (Age 65+) - join B'nai Shalom of Olney and receive your first TWO years of membership for the price of ONE year.
