Nursery School

The B'nai Shalom of Olney Nursery School will hold its Twelfth Annual Fall Boutique and Silent Auction on Sunday, October 16, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This fabulous boutique will feature over 60 vendors with unique merchandise such as jewelry, toys, apparel, holiday gift ideas and home accessories. Also featured are a silent auction, themed raffle baskets and free gift wrapping. The event will take place at the Longwood Community Recreation Center located at 19300 Georgia Avenue in Brookeville, about about one mile north of Route 108. For more information call 301-260-1406. Admission is free and open to all.

High Holiday Ticket Sales

By now you should have received your High Holiday information packet. Please read through it carefully. Just a special note on a new service this year. The interactive Learning service for individuals and families of all ages. It is designed to meet the needs of families with elementary aged children, families preferring an abbreviated service, plus those who would like a learning environment. Please send your forms in today.

MOVIE NIGHT

Israel Affairs and BSO Film Festival Present: Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi on Sunday, September 18th at 7:00pm
Produced and filmed in Israel, Shemi Zarhin's bittersweet tale of a (highly) dysfunctional Israeli family is at times hilarious, at other times heart-rending. If you liked the wonderful Israeli film "Broken Wings," then Bonjour - a slightly lighter cup of tea - is definitely right up your alley.

Religious School

• The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6. The first Wednesday is September 7. The first Sunday is September 11.
  
• The first Junior Congregation of the year is Saturday, September 10 from 9:30-11:30 in Rooms 13, 14, and 15.
  
• Post cards will be mailed home early next week to all registered grades K-7 students confirming their Hebrew school days of attendance. Class lists will be posted on the first day of school.
  
• In accordance with synagogue policy, all synagogue financial obligations accrued through June 30, 2005, must be paid in full and you must be current on all pledges (or an arrangement made with your financial secretary) to register for religious school. If you have sent in your religious school registration forms and have a past due balance on your account, your school registration has been placed on hold.
  
  The bookkeeping department has sent out their July quarterly bills. If you registered for religious school after July 15 (our due date), on your October bill you will see two quarters of tuition charges. To avoid paying two quarters at once, you may make a payment before the October quarterly bill is mailed. Please call the bookkeeping department at 301-774-0879 if you have any questions regarding your account.
  
• If you have not yet registered, please be advised that some classes are already closed.
  
• Those students who participated in our ulpan classes last year received a letter regarding an ulpan class this coming year. Please return the tear-off and appropriate fee to the religious school office as soon as possible.
  
• We look forward to seeing you in September!

Youth Department

• Please join us September 11th from 3:00 – 5:00 when we have an ice cream social to meet and greet our new youth department. Both Adam, our Youth Director and Miryam, our NEW USY advisor would love to meet all of you!

• Bonim will make Jewish New Year cards for Jewish American troops serving in Iraq & Afghanistan at BSO on September 18th at 10:30am.
  

KOACH

Koach College Outreach is a project of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. KOACH provides college-age students the opportunity to maintain and develop connections to Conservative Judaism. We strive to maintain a connection with our college students by sending them holiday greetings and packages as well as the monthly newsletters and weekly announcements. We’ve held college services on weekends when many students are home, featuring speakers who address issues pertinent to campus life.

We would like to stay in touch with your son or daughter while in college. To add your student or to update their information, please send the following to Ruth Burka at raburka@aol.com. Name, School, Address, Year of graduation, email address and please put Koach in the subject line. The only way we will get this information is if you supply it to us.

Mens Club

• The Men’s Club will have an open meeting for all members and perspective members on Thursday, September 15 at the synagogue starting after 7:30 pm Minyon at 8 pm
  
• Please save the date of Sunday evening Sepember 25 starting at 6:30 pm when the Men’s Club will host a Texas Hold-um tournament. Details for this event will be forthcoming but everyone, including the ladies and outside guests are invited to attend and participate. The entrance fee will be discounted for paid up members of the
  Men’s Club.
  
• Entertainment books are available once again in the front office.

FREE TRIP TO ISRAEL!

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and its local Taglit-birthright israel program invite area graduate students and young professionals to join friends and colleagues on a 10-day free trip to Israel this Winter, 2005-2006. Participants will travel throughout Israel and embrace the beauty, excitement and complexities that comprise modern Israel today. Registration for this upcoming trip starts Sept. 8, 2005. The Washington, D.C. community trip to Israel is funded by The Jewish Federation, the United Jewish Endowment Fund and taglit-birthright israel.

This community-based trip is open to Washington, D.C. area Jewish young adults, 22 to 26 years old, who have never traveled to Israel on an organized peer program. The trip is free and includes roundtrip airfare, plus 10-days of educational programming, day trips, and other special opportunities
