people are saying kaddish, while several of our regulars are either on vacation
or home recuperating.
Please consider attending the minyan that is the same date as your birthday
or anniversary. For example, if your birthday is on April 18, come to minyan
on July 18 and August 18. Thank you.
Welcome Rabbi Ulmer
Rabbi Moshe Ulmer began
his tenure as the Interim Rabbi at B'nai Shalom of Olney on August 1st. If
you need to contact him, please stop in, call the office or send him an
email at
rabbi@bnaishalomofolney.org .
We welcome Rabbi Ulmer and look forward to learning and worshipping with
him this year! On August 7th at 7:00pm, we will
have a Meet
and Greet Ice Cream Social so you will have an opportunity to talk
with him. Learn more about Rabbi Ulmer at http://www.bnaishalomofolney.org/BSO_FILES/rabbi.htm
Nursery School
B'nai Shalom of Olney welcomes Pam Gorin as the new Director
of the Nursery School. Pam will be available in the NS office during the
week and can be
reached at
pam.gorin@bnaishalomofolney.org .
We know our children will thrive under her leadership!
High Holiday Ticket Sales
By now you should have received your High Holiday information packet.
Please read through it carefully. Just a special note on a new service this
year. The interactive Learning service for individuals and families of all
ages. It is designed to meet the needs of families with elementary aged children,
families preferring an abbreviated service, plus those who would like a learning
environment.
Religious School
- We are in the process of forming our classes for this coming year and
can no longer guarantee your preferred mid -week day. There are some classes
that are already closed. Religious school registration forms were due by
July 15, 2005. The early bird discount date has passed and is no longer applicable.
Many of our current students have siblings in grades K-2 and we are eagerly
awaiting their arrival. If you need additional forms for siblings or have
any questions, please call the religious school office at 301-774-9323.
- In accordance with synagogue policy, all synagogue financial obligations
accrued through June 30, 2005, must be paid in full and you must be current
on all pledges (or an arrangement made with your financial secretary) to
register for religious school. If you have sent in your religious school
registration forms and have a past due balance on your account, your school
registration has been placed on hold.
- The bookkeeping department has sent out their July quarterly bills. If
you registered for religious school after July 15 (our due date), on your
October
bill you will see two quarters of tuition charges. To avoid paying two quarters
at once, you may make a payment before the October quarterly bill is mailed.
Please call the bookkeeping department at 301-774-0879 if you have any questions
regarding your account.
- Students who participated in our ulpan classes last year received a letter
offering it again this coming year. Please return the tear-off with appropriate
fee to the religious school office.
- The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 6. A back to school
packet with a school calendar will be mailed around August 5. Class lists
will be posted the first day of school.
- We hope you are enjoying your summer vacation
Youth Department
- Now’s the time to register to your child in one of our 4 exciting
Youth Groups. Bonim K-2, Machar 3-5, Kadima 6-8, USY 9-12. Applications were
sent out with the High Holiday Mailing and you will get another one with
your Religious School packet. If you still don’t have one contact Adam
at
bsoyouth@bnaishalomofolney.org It’s going to be a great year!
- Let B’nai Shalom of Olney be your college students’ spiritual
home while they’re away from home. We’d love to have them on
our list for KOACH. It’s no charge and they’ll receive mailings
and special goodies from BSO.
- Save the date for a Welcome Back Kadimah Pool Party - September 18th from
3-5pm
- The Youth Dept. is sponsoring a cell phone collection. The donated phones
will be turned into cash with the proceeds going to the B’nai Brith
Bagel Brigade which uses the money to buy breakfasts for needy kids. Please
deposit just the phone, sorry no accessories, into the box outside the sanctuary.
Sisterhood
- Don't miss the opportunity to wish the entire BSO community a Shanah
Tovah. The deadline to submit your form to be listed in the annual New Year's
Greetings ad sponsored by Sisterhood in the September BSO newsletter is August
8th. If you've misplaced your form, more are available in the BSO lobby (or
can be downloaded from the BSO web site). Questions? Call Cindy Simon 301-570-0430.
Mens Club
- The Men’s Club will have an open meeting for all members and perspective
members on Thursday, September 15 at the synagogue starting after 7:30 pm
Minyon at 8 pm
- Please save the date of Sunday evening Sepember 25
starting at 6:30 pm when the Men’s Club will host a Texas
Hold-um tournament. Details
for this event will be forthcoming but everyone, including the ladies and
outside guests are invited to attend and participate. The entrance fee
will be discounted for paid up members of the Men’s Club.
World Zionist Congress
- Registration to vote in the 2006 elections to the World Zionist Congress
has begun. BSO's registration and participation levels in the last election
were impressive compared to other DC area Conservative shuls. Let's exceed
that level of participation in the upcoming election. Printed registration
materials will soon be available at BSO, but you can register
on-line or
download and mail in your registration forms now. More information about
Mercaz, the elections, and why your participation is so important, as well
as a link to the registration site, can be found on the Mercaz USA website
http://www.mercazusa.org/
Have a voice in decisions that affect you,
your family and your heritageEvery four years, delegates from over
40 countries meet to decide on issues you care deeply about: the education
and safety of
Jews everywhere;
the values, the well-being, and the future of the State of Israel.
These delegates are selected by voters like you. They range from college
students to seasoned vets, religious to secular, liberal to conservative.
You
don't have to join or attend anything. If you're American, Jewish, reside
in the US and agree with the Jerusalem Program, you can register.
You can do it online, or download a form. The American Zionist
Movement expedites the U.S. registration and voting.
When you ballot arrives,
you simply choose the delegate slate that most closely represents your
views.
This is an important time for the Jewish People. Please register,
vote and have your say.
It's Like No Other Vote in the World.
