Social Action

Multiple myeloma, bone marrow cancer, has affected members of the BSO community. At this point there is no cure for the disease, but research has resulted in treatments that have given patients periods of remission. The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundations 2nd annual 5K walk/run in Washington, DC, is being held on November 14 at 8:00 a.m. in West Potomac Park on Ohio Drive. This organization raises awareness, funds the most promising research, fosters collaboration among researchers worldwise, educates the myeloma community, and advocates for optimal patient care.

We have lost at least one member of the congregation to this disease, and in his memory and in honor of Ron Geller's battle, please support this run.

To register for the 5k walk/run online go to www.runwashington.com or contact the Geller family for further details at loisgeller@comcast.net. Registration is $25, which is waived if $100 is raised. If you would like to make a contribution to support the participants in our family and friend team, please let us know. Corporate sponsors ontribute at three different levels with different amounts of publicity; companies can also make in-kind donations for gift bags, such as key chains, water bottles, coupons, and such products as fruit, water, juice, granola bars for the participants. A company team can also be formed, and we are also seeking volunteers for a variety of tasks, such as greeters, course marshals, finish line attendees, registration monitors, and in-kind gift bag stuffers. We also seeking assistance in placing PSAs in local newspapers and radio stations or magazines.

----------------

Twelve-yr-old Amy Katz, a member of the Jewish community, is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. Jews remain underrepresented in the worldwide donor pool, in part due to the tragedy of the Holocaust. For Amy, we have discovered that she has a very rare combination of markers that trace back to an Eastern European Ancestry. To meet this challenge we are asking that all congregants, specifically those with a similar heritage, come out to be tested on Sunday, November 14th, at the JCC in Rockville (6125 Montrose Rd), between 10 am and 5 pm. Eligible donors must be between the ages of 18-60 and in general good health. Blood type does not matter. This test involves a simple swab of cheek cells. By increasing the donor pool, not only are we increasing Amy's odds of finding her match, but also we are building reserves for other Jewish families afflicted with blood diseases and searching for donors, both now and in the future. Donors will be entered into the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry for the benefit of patients worldwide in desperate need of life-saving matches.
